How accurate is the Teal screening?
The Teal Wand has been FDA-approved as a vaginal sample self-collection device for cervical cancer screening in the United States. The Teal Wand sample, when tested at the lab, detects HPV-related cervical precancer 96% of the time, which is as accurate as samples collected by a clinician using a speculum and brush.
At the lab, your sample will be tested for HPV using the Roche Cobas® FDA-approved primary HPV test. Primary HPV testing is the most sensitive screening test for cervical cancer, and is recommended by the American Cancer Society as well as the United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF).
Clinical data and results for the Teal Wand can be viewed here. Please keep in mind that no cancer screen is 100% accurate, and in rare cases cervical cancer can develop even if you do not have HPV. This is why it is important for you to stay up to date with your screenings based on guidelines and contact your Teal provider (or other healthcare provider) if anything changes.
