If insurance covers cervical cancer screening, why is there still a cost for the Teal Wand?
The Teal Wand is new to the market, and FDA authorization does not necessarily mean insurance plans cover all of the services surrounding at-home cervical cancer screening. All plans should cover the services involved in prescribing the test, processing the sample, and returning the results. However, currently, insurance providers have not yet extended full coverage to the screening kit itself (which includes the Teal Wand) or the mailing services needed for the at-home kit delivery and sample shipment to the lab.
This is why there is still an out-of-pocket cost associated with your Teal Wand order, even though you have in-network insurance. This cost does not count toward your out-of-pocket maximum.
We are actively working to expand our coverage and doing everything we can to reduce those costs, including advocating for broader coverage of self-collection as a standard benefit.
